Brembo is a company that has always been outstanding in the design and production of braking systems with innovative technological and design contents and as such has been responsible for the record smashing braking power on Pagani vehicles since 1999, working with the Pagani engineers to provide braking systems that excel in performance, safety and comfort.
The Pagani Huayra features Brembo's latest achievements in the development of Carbo-Ceramic brakes - CCM (made by BSCCB, the JV between Brembo and SGL Group). Tested on the Nürburgring Nordschleife on the Pagani Zonda R, the Huayra has a proven system that is fit for the most demanding conditions.
The weight reduction, obtained with Brembo CCM units compared to normal cast iron discs allows a considerable reduction in the car’s unsprung weight, providing a notable contribution to the exceptional dynamic behaviour of the car in sporting use and to the remarkable driving comfort.
The composite ceramic material produced by Brembo guarantees a high friction coefficient in all conditions of use; one that also remains constant when braking at all speeds, allowing the driver to optimise the force to apply to the pedal.
Thus the thermal deltas, to which the disc is subject during heavy and prolonged decelerations, do not influence the friction coefficient of the composite ceramic material, which is basically always constant. This important property is difficult to obtain with traditional cast iron elements.
The Brembo CCM braking bands are connected to a metal bell that makes it possible to fit the unit to the wheel hub. The patented fixing system, with elastic deformation between braking band and bell, is the result of careful study and allows the different thermal expansions between the materials of the two brake disc elements, braking band and bell, to be compensated for.
Moreover, at high temperatures, the limited deformation of the Brembo CCM units ensures perfectly flat mating with the pads. This important quality is not easily obtained with cast iron discs, which tend to deform when subject to severe and prolonged thermal stresses. This causes noise and there is an inevitable reduction in braking performance.
Furthermore, the hardness of the composite ceramic material guarantees a disc life that is almost the same as that of the car and its surface never corrodes, even in contact with water or the salt solutions that are spread on particular stretches of road during winter. These properties, too, cannot be obtained in any way from conventional discs.
